How to travel with your pet to the European Union?

Traveling with a dog or cat to European Union countries requires a strictly defined procedure that takes at least 4 months, so timely preparation is key.

    1. Microchipping

Your pet must be microchipped before any vaccination. The chip must be readable and comply with the ISO standard.

    2. Rabies vaccination

After microchipping, the pet receives a rabies vaccine (no earlier than at 3 months of age).

    3. Titer test (antibody check)

30 days after vaccination, a blood sample is taken and sent to the Pasteur Institute to check whether the pet has developed a sufficient level of rabies antibodies.

    4. Quarantine period of 3 months

If the test result is positive (meaning the pet is protected), according to EU rules, an additional 90 days (3 months) must pass before applying for a certificate and permission to enter the EU.

    5. Travel preparation (10 days before departure)

No more than 10 days before the trip, the owner visits the vet for:

    • clinical examination of the animal
    • application of anti-flea, tick, and tapeworm treatment
    • certification of these treatments in the passport (signature and stamp)

The veterinarian then issues a health certificate, which, along with the passport and titer test result, is submitted to the veterinary inspection.

    6. Certificate from the veterinary inspection

The veterinary inspection issues the official EU entry certificate, which is specific to the country you are traveling to.. This is the final and mandatory document for crossing the border.

The whole procedure takes at least 4 months – start on time

Without a titer test and a three-month period, there is no entry into the EU

Documentation must be complete, accurate and up-to-date

Our clinic can guide you through the entire process — from microchipping and vaccination, to blood analysis, passport issuance, treatments, and collaboration with the inspection authorities.
