Artificial Insemination – Precision for a Successful Outcome
Artificial insemination is an advanced reproductive method increasingly used in breeding high-quality dogs, especially when natural mating is not possible, advisable, or practical.
Whether the reason is geographical distance between the dogs, incompatibility, health issues, or simply a desire to control the bloodline and ancestry, artificial insemination enables safe and controlled fertilization.
However, for this procedure to be successful, precise preparation and timing are essential.
At our clinics in Novi Sad and Veternik, artificial insemination is performed only after thorough diagnostics and under ideal conditions.
Key Phase: Determining the Day of Ovulation
The most important step in preparing for artificial insemination is determining the day of ovulation in the female. This is most reliably identified by measuring the progesterone level in the blood.
Monitoring begins in the early stage of heat and is repeated every 2–3 days to “catch” the right moment.
When progesterone levels reach between 5 and 10 ng/ml, it’s a clear sign that ovulation has just occurred.
However, the egg is not immediately ready for fertilization — it takes 48 hours to mature, meaning the first insemination is performed 48 hours after confirmed ovulation, and the second one 48 hours later.
This schedule ensures that sperm is introduced into the female reproductive tract at the moment when the eggs are optimally ready for fertilization.
What Is Needed for Artificial Insemination?
To ensure a successful procedure, the following is required:
- A donor male – either present on-site, or whose semen has been previously collected and properly stored (fresh, chilled, or frozen)
- Accurately determined estrus cycle in the female
- A skilled team and appropriate equipment – insemination is performed carefully, under aseptic conditions and with proper technique
Artificial Insemination Is Recommended For:
- Breeding with exceptional males that are not physically available
- Females that do not accept males easily
- Preventing transmission of infections through natural mating
- Planned selective breeding and genetic control of bloodlines
