Rabies Vaccination and Microchipping – Legal Obligation and Protection for Your Pet
Rabies vaccination and microchipping are not only important — they are legally required procedures in pet care.
Rabies Vaccination
According to current law, every dog and cat must be vaccinated against rabies once a year, while hunting dogs must be vaccinated twice a year.
The first dose can be given as early as 3 months of age, but in practice it is often administered after completing the basic vaccination against infectious diseases — around 4 months of age.
An inactivated (dead) vaccine is used, which provides reliable immunity without significant side effects.
Rabies vaccination is required for:
- travel within and outside the country
- obtaining a pet passport
- legal residence of a dog or cat in a household
We perform vaccinations daily in our veterinary clinics in Novi Sad and Veternik, in accordance with the law and modern protocols.
Microchipping of Dogs and Cats
Microchipping is another legal obligation that goes hand in hand with vaccination.
Every dog and cat must be microchipped no later than 6 weeks of age , i.e., before leaving the litter.
In practice, many owners choose to microchip and vaccinate against rabies on the same day — which is the most efficient solution.
How does the microchip work?
- The microchip is injected under the skin on the left side of the neck using a special applicator.
- Reading the chip provides a unique 15-digit number.
- The number is entered into the national database, along with information about the pet and its owner.
In our clinics, every microchip is registered immediately — no additional steps are required from you as the owner.
Why is the microchip important?
If the pet:
- gets lost
- runs away
- is found without an owner
… reading the microchip allows the vet to immediately see the owner’s contact and enables quick reunion.
The microchip is the most reliable form of identification — it cannot be lost like a collar and lasts the pet’s entire life.
Important: be sure to update your information if you change:
- phone number
- address
- owner
Without up-to-date information, the microchip has no function and may delay finding your pet in emergency situations.
In our clinics in Novi Sad and Veternik, microchipping and vaccination are performed quickly, painlessly, and professionally — with advice from our veterinary team on everything your pet needs to be legally and medically protected.
Be responsible. Protect — and identify your pet on time.
