X-ray diagnostics – a look beneath the surface
Radiographic (X-ray) diagnostics is one of the basic and most important methods in modern veterinary medicine. It allows us to painlessly and non-invasively “look inside” the animal’s body and obtain precise information about the condition of bones, joints, chest, lungs, heart, abdomen, and soft tissues.
In our clinic in Novi Sad, radiographic diagnostics are used daily on a large number of patients – whether in emergency cases, routine examinations, or monitoring chronic conditions.
X-rays are used for a wide range of problems – from fractures and injuries, through tumors, lung and heart diseases, to checking for foreign bodies in the digestive or respiratory systems.
When a dog or cat swallows an unknown object (pebble, toy, bone, metal), an X-ray is the fastest and most reliable way to accurately determine the location and size of the foreign body – which is crucial for quick response and prevention of serious complications.
In older animals, it is used to assess the condition of joints and the spine, especially when arthritis is suspected, while in young dogs it is important for early detection of hereditary deformities of hips and elbows (dysplasia).
X-rays are also important for monitoring recovery after fractures, surgeries, and orthopedic interventions.
One of the important applications of X-ray diagnostics is in veterinary cardiology. A chest X-ray is an indispensable part of the cardiological examination, as it provides information about the size and shape of the heart, condition of the lungs, and blood vessels.
Also, the X-ray image is used in so-called staging in dogs with heartworm – to assess how advanced the disease is and whether secondary changes have occurred in the heart and lungs.
Unlike a regular clinical exam, X-rays provide a clear visual image of internal changes, even when symptoms are not yet expressed. Therefore, it is an irreplaceable tool not only in emergency situations but also as part of a broader diagnostic evaluation in chronic patients.
The imaging takes only a few minutes, and in cases when complete stillness is required, it is done under mild sedation to get the most accurate results without stressing the animal.
Our clinic in Novi Sad is equipped with a modern digital high-resolution X-ray machine, which enables fast imaging, clear pictures, and minimal radiation exposure, in accordance with all standards.
X-ray is often the first, but crucial step toward an accurate diagnosis.
Thanks to it, we can quickly react, recognize the problem, and help the pet when it matters most.
