Medical Grooming for Dogs and Cats
Medical Grooming, Sedation, and Care — A Practical Approach to Pet Health and Safety
At our clinic, alongside preventive and therapeutic care, we provide medical grooming services for dogs, cats, and rabbits. This type of grooming is not cosmetic but is performed for medical reasons, aiming to facilitate treatment and improve hygiene conditions for the animal.
When is medical grooming performed?
Medical grooming is applied in the following cases:
- Matted fur that cannot be brushed out, under which wounds, irritations, or infections may be present
- Wet wounds and fungal skin infections where better access to treatment and skin drying is needed
- Skin injuries requiring daily cleaning and care
- Post-surgical care where the area must be cleaned to monitor and maintain the wound
Medical grooming eases examination and treatment for both veterinarians and owners at home. Sometimes it is the first step to solving a long-standing health problem “hidden” beneath layers of tangled fur.
Grooming aggressive and painful animals
Some animals react aggressively due to fear, pain, or previous bad experiences. When grooming is necessary for for aggressive or frightened pets, or animals in acute pain, we use sedation.
Sedation allows the procedure to be done:
- Safely for the animal
- Without risk to staff and owners
- Without added stress or injuries
However, it is important to note that every sedation or anesthesia carries some risk. Owners must be informed and sign consent before such procedures.. Owners must be informed about this and sign a consent before carrying out such interventions.
Additional care: nail trimming and ear cleaning
Along with every bath and grooming, regardless of the reason, we regularly perform basic hygiene care:
- Nail trimming — to prevent injuries, paw deformities, and pain while walking
- Ear cleaning — especially important for breeds with floppy ears where moisture and dirt accumulate, promoting infections
Medical grooming is not a luxury but part of responsible pet health care.
If you notice your pet’s fur is tangled, the skin irritated, or they react aggressively to touch — contact us.
